The Theory
In sound recording and reproduction, audio mixing is the process of combining multitrack recordings into a final mono, stereo or surround sound product.
In the process of combining the separate tracks, their relative levels (i.e volumes) are adjusted and balanced and various processes such as equalization and compression are commonly applied to individual tracks, groups of tracks, or even the overall mix.
In stereo and surround sound mixing, the placement of the tracks within the stereo (or surround) field are adjusted, balanced and their panoramic position is manipulated and or enhanced. This practical, aesthetic, or otherwise creative treatment is done in order to produce a finished version that is appealing to listeners.
Audio mixing techniques and approaches vary widely and have a significant influence on the final product.
This is the process where your recordings come to life – or not. A skilled mixing engineer will take your songs to a new level, providing them with the sound they deserve.
While it may not take too long for someone to pick up the general mechanics, it takes years of experience to be able to bring out the best qualities of every instrument in your arrangement.
